This week end… we went to Rotterdam!

Following a series of unfortunate events our booking to Amsterdam for the week end has been cancelled or, more precisely, it had to changed. So, instead of try and book in Amsterdam for 2 days again we added a day in Rotterdam.

What an amazing city! i immediately fell in love with it. We spent the night in the Van Der Valk HotelFor a very cheap price we got a lovely double room from laterooms.com not far away from the airport. We travelled in the evening after work so it was amazing spending the night relaxing in the beautiful bar of the hotel. The morning after we were off to explore the city.

We got the bus from the hotel, an easy 10 minutes commute to the city centre for 4 euros each. As we arrived the weather was rainy and cold but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the beauty of this modern and spacious city. My main objective was to find the statue of Erasmus of Rotterdam, in front of the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, the only remnant of the medieval city of Rotterdam. However we were freezing and starving so we decided to look for a Café first.

We started walking around, heading in the direction of the statue and the church. We crossed The Beurstraverse, an underground pedestrian shopping passage that connects the Lijnbaan and the Hoogstraat and we proceeded east. As we passed some canals and a market we saw a sign of a Cafe that wasn’t very attractive at first but, nevermind! We were hungry. We decided to stop anyway and as we got closer the place looked quite pretty. Once inside we knew we did it right. It was a beautiful super-dutch nice Café with friendly staff and amazing food! If you are off to Rotterdam, make sure you pay them a visit and try their Flammekueche: Cafè Van Zanten.

After brunch we were ready to explore even more of this beautiful place but we were supposed to be in Amsterdam in the afternoon so we had to start making our way towards the station. We did so trying to make the most of our little time left in Rotterdam and planned our walk to tty to see as much more as we could. We passed the beautiful spacious roads full of shops and we ended up in Schouwburgplein. Now, we were a bit shocked about this place, the landscape was amazing! I really liked the view and the square even if I couldn’t work out what I was looking at. Luckily we had our little guide with us, Roaming Rotterdam (you can find it for free at the hall of the hotel) and it stated: “The Acclaimed and denounced in equal measure by architecture critics all over the world, the square was built on the roof of a parking garage. Various materials were used in its construction, including an epoxy floor, steel and natural stone plates, and wooden flooring. The bent red lamp posts are evocative echoes of dockside cranes. The square is lined in sidewalk cafés, restaurants and theatres.”

We walked on the red carpet around the square and finished our walk to the central station. Here, once again, the view was stunning. Big, tall, modern buildings rising in the sky in a spacious and open square. As we entered the triangular, modern, high building of the central station ready for Amsterdam we left a bit our heart in that beautiful city that was Rotterdam, promising ourself to be back in the summer to explore more!
